Objective #1 : Maintain navigability of Bennett Creek by promoting the maintenance of the depth / width of the channel by the proper authorities.

Our primary objective is to maintain the depth and width of the navigation channel, from the mouth of Bennett Creek where it joins the Nansemond River to the Bennett Creek Park and Boat Launch, owned by the City of Suffolk.

The area of main concern is the channel at the mouth of the creek, between Green Can Day markers # 1 and # 3. Knowing that this area is highly susceptible to shoaling, we continually monitor the condition of the channel and solicit the federal/city resources necessary to maintain safe navigation through a regular program of maintenance dredging.

The City of Suffolk and the Norfolk District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers signed a Local Cooperation Agreement in 1991 which provides for the on-going maintenance of the above-mentioned channel. Our objective is to ensure that the terms of the Agreement are adhered to and to assist these authorities in carrying out the Agreement.
